Homeschooler Mom

I ventured out into cyberspace this weekend in search of homeschooling resources and came across a wonderful site called The Homeschool Lounge. It’s a free online community exclusively for homeschooling moms, and I knew right away I wanted to be a part of it.

No man (or woman) is an island, and in the homeschooling world, this phrase couldn’t ring more true. We as human beings need social interaction…some more than others. And my husband can attest to the fact that I’m one of those “more than others”.

Having been a work at home mom (WAHM) on the internet for the past four years, I recognize the need for stepping out and finding friendship and fellowship of like-minded individuals…they don’t just mysteriously appear in your living room.

About a year ago, we started attending a new local church…and when I say local, I mean just a few miles from here, and that is a huge blessing being out in the middle of a rural county. To my surprise there was a huge percentage of families from that body who home-schooled their children, and at first I thought that was strange. Now, I’m not so sure.

It seems to me like homeschooling should be the norm and folks sending little ones off in a school bus for 7+ hours a day should be considered abnormal. My vantage point concerning parenting my children has certainly changed this past year, and I believe it’s been for the better.

Well, a few months ago I discovered our church has a homeschooling “support” group and I was invited to join in since I was considering homeschooling this fall. Can I just say, WOW! What an amazing feeling to be surrounded by other moms who’ve been there, done that and are still happy about being homeschooler moms. It was so encouraging to me, to say the least.

The only downfall to me is that this group only meets once a month. While I have their phone numbers at my disposal, hooking up with one another is not always easy at any given time of the day, so I knew I needed reinforcements. Hence my recent venture online.

I’m still finding my way around, but so far I’m loving what I see at The Homeschool Lounge. If you have a few minutes, I recommend hopping on over there and checking it out for yourself.
