Homeschool Memoirs!

Homeschooler Mom

About Me

My picture My name is Carrie and I’m a 39 year old, work-at-home-mom/stepmom & wife. I currently live in rural Central Virginia and spend most of my time changing diapers, training preschoolers, taming a teenager, cooking sit-down dinners, keeping/cleaning house and working online.

I spent my 20’s and early 30’s pursuing a career in accounting and a childhood dream of acting on stage.

In early 2000, I met my husband and we were married in late 2001. I became an instant stepmom to a wonderful 6 year old boy, Tyler whom we raise together.

In late 2003 I gave birth to my first daughter, Lauren and decided I did not want to go back to work. So, I left my accounting job in the summer of 2004, moved back east to be closer to my family and pursued a Work-At-Home-Mom status on the Internet. I considered homeschooling Tyler that fall but discovered I was pregnant again and decided it would be too much.

So we put him in public school and a year later I gave birth to my next child, a boy, Michael and I struggled alone at home to raise two small children (15 months apart) and an active 10-year-old, while my husband practically single-handedly ran a retail wallpaper store.

In mid-2006 my husband left the store and joined me at home to work full-time on the internet. A year later I gave birth to another bouncing baby boy, Matthew. Tyler was scheduled to start middle school that fall and we weren’t prepared to send him to the public Middle School, so we chose to send him to a small private school.

Here we are a year later, dissatisfied with this past year’s schooling, we’ve considered another private school and are believing God for financial provisions to make attending that school a reality. Again, I considered home schooling him, and he said he wanted to be homeschooled, but given his age, the stepparent/stepchild tension in our relationship, the three younger children at home and the fact that this would be my first venture into the homeschooling world, we chose to go with this other school.

In the meantime Lauren was slated to start Pre-K and it just pained me to think of sending her away to school…I love having her at home, and I want to be the one to train her up. So with my desire to have more control over what is being taught to my children and having so many other homeschooling families in my church to turn to for support I chose to dive into being a homeschooler mom for the first time to my preschooler.

With Michael not so far behind in age, I expect he’ll be getting in on the action too. I can hardly wait!

So why did I start this blog?

Since I love to write and I’m kind of new to this whole homeschooling thing, I thought it would be great to share my journey of being a Homeschooler Mom with others who might be going through a similar situation, not to mention just having a place to share my thoughts on this new facet in my life.

I hope you enjoy the ride!

Thank you Carrie. Finally an honest review in a small space. I have been pouring over the internet for the past three days trying to figure out this whole homeschooling thing. We too are getting ready to homeschool our five and seven year old. No bad experiences at public school, but just a calling (we believe) from the Lord to bring the girls home and train them up in the ways of the Lord. I had been leaning towards the My Father’s World curriculum and just “happened” upon your website. I am going to check out the other (Danielle’s Place). I too am a stepmom to an 11 year old boy and also a 13 year old girl. My husband and I have 3-year old also and I was wondering what I was going to do with her. So if for nothing else I may be using the Danielle’s Place curriculum for her! Thank you again. May God bless you and direct you in the days ahead:) Marci Stone
